RAW showcases indie talent in visual art, film, fashion design, music, performance art, hair and makeup artistry, and photography. RAW is a fun and alternative way for artists to showcase both to their local community and the world-at-large. RAW is not your average art show. They are loud, colorful, creative, and all about their artists. They are RAW. RAW currently operates in over 60 cities across the United States, Australia, Canada and the UK! Every other month, RAW Directors in cities across the world hand-pick and spotlight local artistic talent in visual art, fashion design, film, music, performance art, hair & makeup artistry, and photography through local eclectic RAW events. With artists from all genres in each showcase, RAW events come together to form an amazing one-night circus of creativity. What can you expect when attending a RAW Showcase? You’ll experience an independent film screening (usually a short, webisode or music video), a pop-up gallery featuring several independent visual artists and photographers, fashion shows from up-and-coming local designers, live musical performances, vendor booths featuring local artisans and accessories designers, and live performance art. You’ll get a little taste of everything. Combine all this creativity with drinks, fun, and good company!

Come one, come all to Rippavilla Plantation, the stately, 160+ year old home of Nathaniel F. Cheairs IV. and Susan McKissack Cheairs. Located in the heart of Spring Hill, Tennessee – just minutes from historic Franklin and downtown Nashville “Music City” – Rippavilla Plantation features a stunning and fully restored 1850s Greek Revival styled mansion, complete with original Cheairs family antiques, heirlooms and Civil War artifacts. The grounds, which span 98 acres in Maury County, encompass the family and slave cemeteries, Freeman’s Bureau school house, slave quarters, the Battlefield of Spring Hill (precursor to the famous Battle of Franklin) and the Museum Gift Shop. Rippavilla Plantation is open daily for guided tours, field trips and family outings, and is the venue for many popular events, check out their event calendar for more information. The extraordinary home, which is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, is also the ideal setting for weddings, receptions and other private functions. The Robertson County Historical Society was organized in 1968, with the museum opened to the public in 1998 in the location of the former 1916 Springfield Post Office.

Sam Davis Home

The historic Sam Davis Home and Plantation is a historic treasure set on 168 serene acres in the heart of Smyrna, Tennessee. Open February through December, the site welcomes guests for tours, field trips, an array of special events, weddings and other special occasions, and so much more. Built in the early 1800’s, this Greek Revival style home is one of the top cultural and historic attractions in Smyrna, Rutherford County, and Middle Tennessee. With approximately 20,000 visitors per year, the atmosphere of the site varies between a hum of activity and a tranquil park. With two historic homes, several outbuildings, the family cemetery, and over 100 of the Davis family’s personal affects on display, visitors to the Historic Sam Davis Home are able to take a step back in time and get a true sense of 19th century life.

Sarratt Gallery is located in the main lobby of the Sarratt Student Center. For additional information, call (615) 322-2471. All events are open to the public free of charge. Hours: Gallery Hours are 9am to 9pm Monday through Friday and 10am to 10pm Saturday and Sunday. During the summer months, as well as holiday and semester breaks, the gallery closes at 4:30pm each weekday and is closed on weekends.

Sons of Confederate Veterans

The SCV is a 501(c)3 non-profit, non-racial, non-sectarian veterans advocacy and educational corporation containing members descended from Confederate Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines. The veterans of the United Confederate Veterans formed the SCV in 1896 and Confederate General Stephen Dill Lee gave this “charge” or mission statement in 1906: “To you, Sons of Confederate Veterans, we will commit the vindication of the cause for which we fought. To your strength will be given the defense of the Confederate soldier’s good name, the guardianship of his history, the emulation of his virtues, the perpetuation of those principles which he loved and which you love also, and those ideals which made him glorious and which you also cherish.”

The Stones River Craft Association was established to develop, encourage and preserve the fine crafts of the Stones River region through intracommunity relations, support artists, and provide our community the opportunity for creative and cultural experience. The Art Studio Tour is an annual event established in 1993 that invites the public to visit working artists and their studios in Murfreesboro and the surrounding area. Artist studios are open to the public and host a variety of guest artists creating a rich experience at each location. The event is held to engage with the public, and showcase processes, operations, locations and artistry of creative professionals working in our community. The event is fun for the whole family and provides an exciting look into the diversity and abundance of the creativity available in the area.

The Aaron Douglas Gallery was established in 1994 in honor of the famed Harlem Renaissance artist and former Fisk art professor Aaron Douglas. Located on the 3rd floor of the John Hope and Aurelia Franklin Library, the Douglas Gallery offers a regular schedule of exhibitions that feature works from the permanent collection as well as art works by faculty, students and leading contemporary artists. Housed in a late 19th century Victorian building, The Carl Van Vechten Gallery was established in 1949, when the acclaimed American painter Georgia O’Keeffe donated to Fisk the extraordinary group of works that form The Alfred Stieglitz Collection. The collection was given in honor of O’Keeffe’s husband, Alfred Stieglitz, the pioneering American photographer and art impresario. The gallery was named in honor of Carl Van Vechten, an American novelist, critic, photographer and philanthropist, who played an important role in securing The Stieglitz Collection for Fisk. The Carl Van Vechten Gallery houses a changing schedule of traveling exhibitions and temporary installations from Fisk University’s permanent art collections. Every two years, the gallery features The Alfred Stieglitz Collection of Modern American and European Art, which includes works by Pablo Picasso, Paul Cezanne, Auguste-Pierre Renoir, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Georgia O’Keeffe, Charles Demuth, Marsden Hartley, and Arthur Dove. The first Friday of each month, the Franklin Art Scene includes dozens of sites dispersed through an area thriving with spots listed on the National Register of Historic Places in downtown Franklin. The free event celebrates Williamson County’s local craftsmanship and provides both the novice and the art connoisseur an opportunity to see a sweeping variety of magnificent work – from blown glass to turned wood to mixed media and more. Many of the galleries and working studios serve complimentary refreshments during the evening, and some offer live music. Art crawl guests may begin at any participating location on the map: Free trolley rides, provided by Williamson Source, circulate among all the stops, and patrons can jump on and off at will from 6pm to 9pm. The Hiram Van Gordon Gallery is located in Elliot Hall on Tennessee State University’s main campus. Elliot Hall is on the backside of campus, from 28th Ave pass the front of campus, continue on 28th Ave North/Ed Temple Blvd, take a Left on Dr. Walter S Davis Blvd, then turn Left on 39th Ave North, take a Left at the stop sign on to John L. Driver, then a Left on 37th Ave North. The first building on your Right is Elliot Hall. Parking is right past the building, up the hill or to the left. Vanderbilt University Dyer Observatory is a special place of learning tucked high atop one of the tallest peaks on the southern edge of Nashville. Here, both school children and the public are introduced to the wonders of astronomy and space exploration. The primary instrument at Dyer is the 24″ Seyfert telescope. The Dyer Observatory is also home to the wildly popular Bluebird on the Mountain concert series. Dyer Observatory is closed annually December-February.

The Tennessee Agricultural Museum serves its community through educational programs, exhibits, and special events that attract more than 12,000 people annually. School groups are welcome to learn about Tennessee’s rural past through curriculum-focused field trips and audiences of all ages are encouraged to explore the site’s exhibits that contain over 3,000 artifacts related to life in Tennessee before electricity. Founded in 1960, the Tennessee Association of Museums fosters communication and cooperation between museums, cultural societies, and other members on matters of common interest to all. Our goal is to inform the public on the importance of understanding and preserving Tennessee’s cultural, historical, and scientific heritage. We also encourage publication and dissemination of information on the state’s past as well as the development of professional standards of members who bring that past to the public.

Tennessee Historical Society

Founded in 1849, the Tennessee Historical Society is the oldest continually operating historical organization in Tennessee. Until the early 20th century, the THS focused on collecting documents and artifacts related to Tennessee’s natural, aboriginal, and civil history. The artifact collection became the basis for the Tennessee State Museum, and the documents, which include manuscripts dating back to the colonial era, are now housed at the Tennessee State Library and Archives. The Tennessee Historical Society has published the Tennessee Historical Quarterly, a peer-reviewed journal on Tennessee history, since 1942. The THS also edits the Tennessee Encyclopedia of History and Culture and publishes books and resources on Tennessee History. In 2000, the THS began awarding the annual Wills Research Fellowship, funded by the Society’s Jesse E. Wills Memorial Fund. The award supports scholars interested in traveling to Nashville to use the society’s collections at the Tennessee State Library and Archives, and encourages scholarship on Tennessee history. In 2009, the THS began sponsoring and producing Tennessee History Day, a statewide competition for students in grades six through twelve. The Museum features interactive games such as a virtual reality, one-on-one basketball game, a strength training apparatus used by Olympic swimmers, college football and basketball exhibits, NASCAR video games, two 30-seat theaters with sports videos, and more.
