Meat-and-three standard-bearer Arnold’s Country Kitchen went through a much-needed refurbishment and expansion at its flagship SoBro location in 2016, all the better to handle the lengthy lines for some of the best homestyle cooking in the country. The praise has been steady since Arnold’s 1981 opening: In fact, the prestigious James Beard Foundation awarded it an America’s Classics winner in 2009. Several years ago owners Jack and Rose Arnold handed the reins to their talented and personable chef son Kahlil Arnold, who oversees the daily activity. The menus varies somewhat depending on the day — see the website and Facebook page for daily schedules. Would-be dieters would best head on down the road, or at least choose the unsweetened tea.
