Tenchi Troupe began its humble beginnings as the Dancing Panthers organization at Watt Hardison Elementary. The Dancing Panthers was run by Rachel Vanover, a Sumner County teacher who wanted to help bring dance instruction to Portland, TN. She discovered many of her dancers were talented and thus began a small class of five talented students in a portable at Watt Hardison Elementary. The program continued to increase in popularity and thus developed into Tenchi Troupe.

Tenchi Troupe is a dance troupe designed to bring the world of dance to children of small town communities. The troupe takes its basic format from traditional Ballet Company roles and beliefs. Each child within the program is called an Artist and is given opportunity to grow at their own pace. There are no auditions, as parts are given out based on an Artists’ abilities, and all performances are open to the public.

Our curriculum is based on Finis Jhung curriculum for dancers. This particular curriculum was created by Finis Jhung and is designed to instruct dancers in ways that professional dancers rehearse every day. Titles are important in a ballet company format thus Tenchi Troupe revolves around them. An Artist first becomes a New Artist, climbing up the ladder through hard work, patience, and perseverance. Artist are taught to look up to those that have more experience than them and to learn from these individuals so that they may improve.

85-90% of our costumes are handmade by the Director, Rachel Vanov
