From its very beginning, Seay-Hubbard has been surrounded by and involved in the African-American history of this community. Beginning at this corner on which our church stands, and continuing down First Avenue for two blocks, was the first campus of Meharry Medical College. Meharry was founded in 1876 by The Methodist Church as a result of a growing awareness of the great need for health services for the freed African slaves. One year earlier in 1875, only a few blocks away, this Methodist Church was organized. It was known then as Seay’s Chapel. The church’s outreach now extended to the Meharry College. Some of the faculty and students attended worship services, and became members of the church, as well as graduates of the school.
