Nashville Jazz Workshop is offering a combination of 3-week, 6-week and 1-day master classes. All course times are listed in central time zone (CDT).
Vocal Faculty: Lori Mechem, Dara Tucker, Rachael Price, Carolyn German, Liz Johnson & Joe Freel.
Instrumental Faculty: Rod McGaha, Roger Spencer, Matt Endahl, Pat Bergeson, Don Aliquo, Kirk Whalum, and Greg Bryant.
They are also offering listening classes for all music enthusiasts – no experience necessary. Courses vary in length.

Sight and Sound with Rod McGaha
Mondays 6pm-7pm (6wk – start 10/19), $100 The High Points of Blue Note Records and the Imagery that went with it.
History of Soul Jazz with Greg Bryant
Tuesdays 6pm-7:30pm (3wk – 11/10, 17 & 24), $100 Soul Jazz, the fusion of blues, gospel and rhythm & blues with Jazz. Sounds and Style of Julian “Cannonball” Adderly with Don Aliquo
Wednesdays 7pm-9pm (3wk – 11/11, 18 & 25) $125 In this three week course we will explore the sound, style and musical legacy of Julian “Cannonball” Adderley. Be prepared to analyze, study transcriptions and do some intensive listening. For all instruments and vocalists.
Applying Patterns to Standard Repertoire with Roger Spencer
Tuesdays 6pm-7pm (6wk – start 10/20) $125 This Improv class will be more about the music and less about the calisthenics. We’ll be taking Jazz patterns and licks and applying them to standard popular and jazz repertoire.
Keyboard Basics with Matt Endahl
Saturdays 12pm-2pm (6wk – start 10/24) $250 Students study the keyboard, learning note names, intervals, chord structures, and musical notation in an easy to understand format. Students will learn a better sense of pitch center, chord shapes, and overall musical accuracy.
Vocal Literature: Johnny Mercer with Lori Mechem
Mondays 6pm-8pm, or Wednesdays 7pm-9pm (6wk) $250 Study and perform over 24 famous Johnny Mercer compositions, among the most popular hits of the mid-1930s through the mid-1950s, including “Laura,” “Midnight Sun,” “Autumn Leaves,” “Days of Wine and Roses,” and “Moon River.” In this class, you’ll focus on melody, phrasing, lyric content, stylistic considerations, arrangements, performance techniques, and song forms that apply to Mercer’s music
Signature Songs with Carolyn German
Tuesdays 7pm-9pm (3wk – 10/19, 26 & 11/2) $125 Every singer needs at least one song that truly spotlights their unique style. It may be your “go to” tune for sitting in as a guest with the band, an inimitable rendition that your fans will come to expect, or perhaps a brand new tune that is perfectly “you”. The art of honing a Signature Song is also allows you to explore your own unique gifts.
Introduction to Jazz Singing with Joe Freel
Tuesdays 7pm-9pm (3wk – 10/20, 27 & 11/3) $125 Have you ever wanted to learn to sing jazz standards? Now’s your chance! Students will learn songs with emphasis on correct melodies, groove, jazz phrasing and lyric interpretation. Students will be provided recorded tracks to sing with in male and female keys.
Advanced Vocal Literature: Anita O’Day with Rachael Price
Tuesdays 6pm-8pm (3wk – 11/10, 17 & 24) $125 Study and practice the stylings of Anita O’Day with songs such as “Sweet Georgia Brown”, “Tea for Two”, “Whisper Not” and many more. The class will focus on repertoire, stylistic approach, interpretation, phrasing and a little scatting!
Advanced Vocal Literature: Nancy Wilson with Dara Tucker
Thursdays 6pm-8pm (5wk – start 10/22) $210 Study and practice the stylings of Nancy Wilson with songs such as “Never Will I Marry”, “Guess Who I Saw Today”, “Save Your Love for Me” and many more. Learn the art of melodic singing by practicing vocal inflection, phrasing, tone, and style authenticity.
Vocal Technique with Liz Johnson
Thursdays 6pm-8pm (5wk – start 10/22) $210 This class will help keep the student’s voice in great shape with vocal exercises designed to promote ease of singing and to set the natural voice free. Students will learn some vocal physiology and anatomy, expand their range, and explore conversational singing through jazz. Unlock the secrets of singing through playful exercises, a bit of voice science, and jazz.

Grammy Winning Saxophonist Kirk Whalum presents a two-hour master class “Soul Workoout” for all on Saturday November 7th 12pm-2pm CDT.
