Experienced backpackers and Appalachian Trail thru-hikers will offer a unique look into the history of the trail and what one needs to prepare for a monumental hike.
Is hiking the Appalachian Trail, or embarking on any kind of multi-day thru-hike, on your bucket list? If so, this free class, Hiking the Appalachian Trail: A Beginner's Guide, is for you. As part of the Tennessee State Museum's programming around their award-winning temporary exhibit, Painting the Smokies: Art, History, and Making of a National Park, experienced backpackers and AT thru-hikers will offer a unique look into the history of the trail and what one needs to prepare for a monumental hike.
Katie Wisniewski from Tennessee State Parks will give a brief history of backpacking in Tennessee and explain the ins and outs of backpacking. Thru-hikers Grace Allen, who just completed her first hike of the Appalachian Trail this past year, and Kirk Robinson, who has completed the Trail several times, will speak about their experiences. At the conclusion of the program guests will have time to meet and network with fellow hikers as well as visit the Painting the Smokies exhibit. The program is presented in partnership with Tennessee State Parks.

Free parking is available in the parking lot which is located between the Museum and the Nashville Farmers’ Market. There is also free two-hour parking available along 6th and 7th Avenues. Because there are a limited number of these spots used by both Museum and Farmers' Market visitors, it is highly recommended that on the weekends, visitors seek alternate modes of transportation to visit the Museum. State of Tennessee parking lots are available Monday through Friday, after 5:30pm, or on weekends unless otherwise stated or reserved. Terms and conditions of use may vary according to the requested lot.
