Allison Nyquist leads her first program as Music City Baroque artistic director with music from the English Baroque inspired by two of the most famous tales ever written.
Matthew Locke and Henry Purcell wrote instrumental music for "semi-operas" on the stories of King Arthur and The Tempest. These spectacular and popular productions included speaking roles and dancing as well as singing and were extremely popular Restoration entertainments. William Boyce, although little-known today, was perhaps the leading English-born composer of the 18th century. Writing for the chapel royal, his symphonies are refined and dance-like.
Actor Jake Abell will be the narrator for the performance, with readings from Shakespeare and Tennyson.
