Japanese Moon Viewing

Join us for our seventh annual celebration of Otsukimi, the Japanese Moon Viewing festival!

As the sun sets on Sunday, Sept. 19, Cheekwood’s visitors will turn their eyes to the autumn skies for the first annual Moon Viewing, a celebration of Japanese culture in Cheekwood’s moonlit gardens. Presented in partnership with the Consulate-General of Japan in Nashville and the Japan-America Society of Tennessee, the Moon Viewing will take place from 5-9 p.m. in Cheekwood’s Japanese Garden, recently named “one of the most original Japanese Gardens in North America” by Dr. Kendall H. Brown, author of Quiet Beauty, The Japanese Gardens of North America.

The evening will include a bilingual lantern-lit tour of Cheekwood’s Japanese Garden, an open-house style tea ceremony, and authentic kamishibai-style storytelling of Japanese folk tales about the moon. Throughout the night, guests will enjoy performances, activities and food reflecting the Japanese o-tsukimi, or autumn moon viewing tradition.
