Revered singer and songwriter Dave Simonett will perform at City Winery on March 28 in support of his forthcoming album Red Tail, set for release on March 13 via Thirty Tigers. Well known and beloved as the frontman and songwriter for the widely popular roots band, Trampled By Turtles, Red Tail marks the first time that Simonett has recorded a collection of solo material under his own name.
While Simonett previously recorded and performed as a solo artist under the Dead Man Winter moniker – and was applauded for 2017’s deeply personal and cathartic work Furnace, which earned a late-night TV performance on CONAN – Red Tail is something quite different. Rather than curate songs from his own experiences, Simonett draws inspiration from the spacious and stark Northern woods in his home state of Minnesota. He recorded half of the album on his own in Minneapolis, and the other half with friends at revered Pachyderm Studios in Cannon Falls, MN. The warmth and levity with which the album came together is apparent in Simonett’s conversational and poetic style of songwriting. The result allows listeners to develop their own interpretations from these eight brilliant originals.
“We did everything live. None of the guys knew any of the songs,” Simonett says. “It was just real casual, and I won’t say easy, but as close to easy as it can be. There was just this light attitude throughout the whole process, even when I was working on my own.”
Red Tail documents an artist who is comfortable in his own voice, and not afraid to make an artistic statement outside of the band he’s known and loved for leading. Whether you’re a fan of Trampled By Turtles or incredibly fresh songwriting, don’t miss this chance to hear Simonett live in Nashville. Learn more at DeadManWinter.com.
