(Ed. Note. Updated 4/1 to reflect official announcement)
The Rolling Stones will return to Nashville this June for a concert at LP Field.
Though the date of the show and ticket info have not been officially announced by the powers-that-be. It will take place June 17 and according to our friends at the Nashville Scene, will mark the first time a rock band has headlined the venue. The last time the Stones visited Nashville was in 2002 during a Licks Tour stop at what was then called the Gaylord Entertainment Center – pronounced “the gehk” for short — and now named Bridgestone Arena.
The last time I saw the Stones, unfathomably too long ago, was in 1994 at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey during the Voodoo Lounge Tour. I remember the show in particular because it took place the same weekend as Woodstock ’94, the 25th Anniversary of the legendary Three Days of Peace and Love. I was 22 and an editor at my college newspaper, The Pauw Wow, and planned on reviewing the show, but was having hard time convincing myself I shouldn’t be on a farm in upstate New York instead of in a parking lot off Route 3 in New Jersey. Tailgating there with my friends, we eventually came to a Say Anything moment — there’s a Gen X reference for you — in which we decided that we had “chose” to be there, man, and that made all the difference. The Counting Crows opened up, and I remember running though the crowd to get my seat because they began their set with “Rain King,” which was my favorite song on August and Everything After. The rest of their set was a blur, as was the Stones’, but I do recall the band being great and my having a good time. It’s been 21 years and that’s to be expected, I guess. All the more reason to get tickets and see them this time around.
I thought the staff here at NowPlayingNashville.com and the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee might feel the same, so I did quick poll of who had seen them and when, and what they remembered. Here’s what I got:
Rebecca Finley, Director of Communications:
“St. Louis, 1997, Bridges to Babylon, kick-ass show!!”
Erin Hornsby, Promotions & Web Content Coordinator
“I had to Google it cause I wasn’t sure if it was 2005 or 2006. It was a year after I graduated college and it was at the FedEx Forum. I took some really awesome shots … just can’t find the pics. Anywho, the date was December 3, 2005. Went with a guy only for the tickets (long story). Awesome concert, but not awesome company! But who cares … it was The Stones!”
Carolyn Hannon, Director, Childcare Nashville & Childcare Tennessee
“My husband and I last saw the Stones at Vanderbilt Stadium in ’97, and walked from there over to Centennial Hospital to see my new niece, Halina Hannon, who literally had just been born. Wow, what a night.”
So at least four of us in the building have seen the band and have a least some recollection. Not bad. How about you? When was the last time you saw them? Will you be seeing the again? Let us know in the comments and we’ll get a nice little collection of memories going, and a roll call for June!
