The 2016-17 HCA/TriStar Health Broadway Series at TPAC is brimming with Nashville and Middle Tennessee connections, productions and premieres. The season with launch in September with Evita, Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s smash stage production about the life of Argentina’s First Lady, Eva Perón. Produced locally by Tennessee Performing Arts Center in collaboration with Studio Tenn, Broadway powerhouse Eden Espinosa (Wicked, Brooklyn the Musical, RENT) stars as the titular activist, suffragist and celebrity. The season will wrap in June 2017 with the hysterical Something Rotten!, a 2015 Tony® Award Best Musical nominee. Music and lyrics for the musical were co-written by Nashville songwriter and musician Wayne Kirkpatrick, a Song of the Year Grammy® Award winner for the Eric Clapton/Babyface hit, “Change the World.”
Also on the docket are the Nashville premieres of the 2014 Tony Award-winning Best Musical, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, RENT – 20th Anniversary Tour, The Bodyguard, a new production of Rogers and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music, the 2015 Tony® Award-winning Best Play The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, and the Tony®-winning and Grammy®-winning show, Beautiful – The Carole King Musical.
In the special presentations category, Riverdance returns on its 20th Anniversary Tour. The Book of Mormon, which played a sold-out and record-breaking one-week run in 2014 in Nashville, also returns.
“The unique collaboration to present Studio Tenn’s Evita on TPAC’s annual Broadway season is a testament to Nashville’s capacity to make and appreciate great art,” wrote TPAC in a release announcing the season.
“After 34 years of presenting Broadway, we are doing something we’ve never done before in presenting a collaboration with a local theatre company on our season,” added Kathleen O’Brien, TPAC president and chief executive officer, in the release. “We have wanted to present Evita for some time, and when we found out Studio Tenn wanted to produce that show, the stars aligned for us to seize the opportunity. This allows us to present a highly-anticipated title, build it using Nashville’s creative capability, cast it with Broadway stars, and provide audiences the chance to experience the incredible artistry, design, and craftsmanship behind its creation.”
