Saint Thomas Midtown Hospital
Saint Thomas Midtown Hospital, formerly Baptist Hospital, is a member of Saint Thomas Health and Ascension, and is the largest non profit hospital in Middle Tennessee, licensed for 685 acute and rehabilitation beds. It has approximately 3,200 employees and 1,000 physicians on staff. It is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and it has been named one of the top 100 hospitals in the nation, having received high ratings for many of its services. The hospital is located near downtown Nashville.
Saint Thomas Midtown Hospital was founded in 1918 and has maintained its identity as a faith-based hospital, illustrated in its mission statement as a “caring community devoted to healing with love in the Christian tradition.” In early 2002 Saint Thomas Health System, a part of Ascension Healthcare, the nation’s largest Catholic and non profit health care system, acquired then Baptist Hospital. The hospital, now one of the four hospitals comprising Saint Thomas Health Services, is managed by Seton Corporation.
The hospital is well known for its obstetrical care, which includes a neonatal intensive care unit. It offers a wide spectrum of orthopedic services, a multidisciplinary neurosciences program, comprehensive community cancer program, and cardiac care, among others. Intensive care units care for persons with neuroscience, medical and cardiac problems.
Chaplains are on the front lines of the care at Baptist. They work closely together and with hospital staff. All work is considered sacred, and all employees are considered partners, caregivers and servants in spiritual leadership. Employees are committed to bringing their “hearts as well as their heads” to work. Spirituality is fostered on all levels; thus, chaplains have a very special place, and opportunities abound for learning and creative service.
The pastoral care staff members represent a variety of denominations. Currently the pastoral care department staff includes the director, administrative assistant and staff chaplains.
