Nearly every facet of Jackson’s life revolved around his mansion at The Hermitage. It served as much as an office, gathering hall and place for entertaining as it did as his home. The mansion has now been carefully restored with most of Jackson’s original belongings.
The Hermitage garden and grounds hold the stories of the livelihood and lifestyle of the Jackson’s family; foremost is The Hermitage cotton plantation. Today, the grounds continue to offer a retreat for visitors as they did for Jackson and his family.
Andrew Jackson visited Rachel’s tomb everyday in the gardens she so loved until his health made it unmanageable. Today, Jackson rests alongside Rachel and other family members at The Hermitage.

On Thursday, June 11, Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage will reopen its 1,120-acre site. Since closing on March 17, we have anxiously anticipated the return of our visitors and staff, and we are excited to be able to share this National Historic Landmark with you once again.
We will continue to prioritize the safety of all visitors, staff and volunteers throughout our reopening process. To provide an orderly transition while maintaining safety, our reopening is organized into three phases:
Phase 1: Grounds Pass only, with several restrictions
Phase 2: Grounds Pass plus, with some restrictions lifted
Phase 3: Full Access, with most restrictions lifted
As the COVID-19 situation continues to be fluid, we will monitor the situation and adhere to the guidance of local government officials and medical professionals. We will share more information on the timing of each phase, and what is included, on our website and social media channels.
Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage has experienced many public health events, such as SARS, H1N1 and polio, during its more than 130-year history. As in the past, we will proceed with caution and carefully monitor safety guidelines to ensure as positive and safe a guest experience as possible.
Thank you for returning to The Hermitage. We are excited to have you back!
