Housed in a late-19th century Victorian building, the Carl Van Vechten Art Gallery was established in 1949, when the acclaimed American painter Georgia O’Keeffe donated to Fisk the extraordinary group of works that form The Alfred Stieglitz Collection.
The collection was given in honor of O’Keeffe’s husband, Alfred Stieglitz, the pioneering American photographer and art impresario. The gallery was named in honor of Carl Van Vechten, an American novelist, critic, photographer and philanthropist, who played an important role in securing The Stieglitz Collection for Fisk.
The Carl Van Vechten Gallery houses a changing schedule of traveling exhibitions and temporary installations from Fisk University’s permanent art collections. Every two years, the gallery features The Alfred Stieglitz Collection of Modern American and European Art, which includes works by Pablo Picasso, Paul Cezanne, Auguste-Pierre Renoir, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Georgia O’Keeffe, Charles Demuth, Marsden Hartley, and Arthur Dove.
Fisk University Galleries includes the Carl Van Vechten Gallery, the Aaron Douglas Gallery, and the Aaron Douglas murals. All three are within a short walk of each other. When you arrive at the Carl Van Vechten Gallery one of their Gallery Ambassadors will be happy to direct you to these and other sites on campus.

Additional parking is available behind the gallery; the entrance to that parking lot is on D.B. Todd, Jr., Blvd. Visitors parking in the lot behind the gallery should inform a Gallery Ambassador upon arrival. This is the best parking lot for visitors requiring wheelchair access; if this is the case, please call when you arrive or send a member of your group to the front entrance so that a Gallery Ambassador or member of staff can greet you and facilitate access. There is also a parking lot across Jackson Street, and there is a crosswalk linking the lot and the gallery.
Currently the galleries are open by appointment only.
